OR a job in the culinary ARTS. Soon we will live in a world without land animals and we will have fish in the ocean again………….. We will be vegetarians and eat a good tasting, healthy, balanced diet by preparing vegetables and fish properly with herbs and spices. Currently, it is not the norm here in North America, however with the proper knowledge and ingredients it is possible………….

Perfectly qualified to ask the question, “Would you like fries with that?”

Not sure what to make of those majors. Maybe a career in politics and pundit T.V.? What kind of job can you get with those?

Research has, in fact, shown that liberal arts educations do teach people to process information, create concepts, and compare and contrast. A notable study by Winter, McClelland, and Stewart compared technical colleges, two-year liberal arts schools, and four-year liberal arts schools and found this effect varied just the way you would think: low change in technical colleges (which, to be fair, teach different things), some in 2-year, and the most in 4-year liberal arts schools. That’s the point of liberal arts – to teach you to process any information and think in a more complex manner. This also led to greater success in life and benefits for society (e.g., participation in more civic organizations). The advantage of OJT is to teach applications of knowledge. Both together are better than either alone, but I would argue that learning to learn and think first has its advantages. So would Winter, McClelland, and Stewart. http://tinyurl.com/35jkoa7

I took four years of liberal arts at MonctonU. Three years of random classes from the Arts et Sciences Sociales faculty. That wasn’t a degree per se, but rather an intro into my psychology degree. Back when I was 18 I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I found it out in my four years of liberal arts.

Plus, you don’t have to believe all you hear. The first thing one of my professors told me (even though I just hated her) was ; Don’t take anythyng you hear like cash, including what I say.

^^^ Maybe you took the wrong courses (for you). I quit after my first year, kicked around for about ten years, and read a lot, but then I realized (a) there were things I couldn’t learn on my own, and (b) there was value in hearing what other people had to say so that I wasn’t just cooking up crazy ideas without any challenge. So I went back to school. I managed to hang out with some incredibly smart people who enlarged my world and changed my mind. Everyone has a different path to enlightenment, but it’s a rare person who can get there all alone.

fennec, Dr.C, Motive, lonecat, thank you very much for answering my question. Had I known the value of such a degree I probably would have started off with that instead of going into business from the get go.
