Part of it was to do with World War II. Britain had a secret that enabled its pilots to be ultra effective at night. It was Radar. The ‘Carrot’ story was put out to hide this in part. It also had a secondary benefit. Carrots weren’t rationed but people didn’t want them. Then they heard that Carrots helped you see in the dark and consumption of Carrots rose dramatically. Especially amongst the young.
