Hey business as usual, squeeze the customer for every penny you can get. That’s what businesses do.Lot’s of other examples of “virtual” monopolies. Comcast, and the prescription drug industry and many others.
Southwest doesn’t belong in this toon. They have a completely different business model that’s actually fair. The fares are transparent, you can cancel and get dollar for dollar credits to reschedule, and bags fly free. Throw in generally happy workers and they are way, way, better than the others in this oligopoly.
I’m sure Steve didn’t mean to cast aspersions on Southwest; it’s just that, with the growing tend towards monopoly, there are fewer and fewer businesses to fill out the cartoon. And, I for one, always prefer to drive if at all possible, to being in the TSA cattle call and the sardine can called a plane.
Well, what we need here is more ‘free market’ capitalism. You know, more mergers and deregulation. Give those businesses a free hand and fares and costs will plummet, just plummet.
And there’ll be lots and lots of leg room, too.
Sorry about those United pensions, though. After the execs cashed out, there just wasn’t any money.
Deregulation under Reagan was of course going to increase competition, lower rates, create new airlines and investor opportunities, and improve access to air travel, and make it more comfortable as the companies would put the travelers first. ….riiiiggghhhhttt.
The sharks are well fed, no minnows left, they even ate some whales, and monopoly is good for the public, right?
Has anyone else noticed that the Bad Guys in most of the new TV Shows, Particularly the Sci-Fi shows, are mostly Corporations?.Several of the Sci-Fi shows seem to be featuring a future where “Government” has been successfully “Drowned in a Bathtub” leaving the Corporations running Everything. Most of those futures appear pretty Bleak and “Mad Max” would be right at home..
Reynard61:Excuse me, did you even read the wiki article you posted. The way it reads, we are doing marvelous with airlines today. (so who wrote/edited the piece?)

Everywhere in the USA is within walking distance. If you have the time. Except for Hawaii.
