You don’t pay before the job’s done. No “half down for materials”. That way if the job doesn’t get done, you can still hire somebody else to finish it. And if a contractor can’t afford to front the materials, s/he’s living too close to the edge. What about the poor contractor if the homeowner doesn’t pay? Mechanic’s liens give contractors a LOT of leverage.
Sadly, I expected something like this to happen the moment Val said that she could a contractor who said he could have the new bathroom done in two weeks, and knew without a doubt that he was pulling a scam that would leave the bathroom incomplete and Val out of a lot of money.
once again, we are looking at typical Val. She responds to situations emotionally not rationally. I mean like big deal. So the bathroom is 1/2 done. Get someone to finish it and that’s that. None of this is life threatening..
Contractors like that have no money to take, unless it is the next guys’. The courts won’t let you take his tools, work truck, or even his dog. This is a lesson I have learned and many others before me and after me.
Reminiscent of the Gilmore Girls episode where Luke’s Brother-in-Law, TJ knocks down the outside wall of Lorelai’s Bedroom at the beginning of a remodel, while the Contractor actually In Charge is still going over the Plans prior to starting the work. .TJ says he is a “Self Starter”…

It’s your own fault, Val, for not paying attention to your wedding preparations than the so-called contractor.

It’s too painful to watch someone absolutely refuse to take even the smallest responsibility for their own stupidity. No empathy here.
The only way to salvage the situation is to hire a competent contractor to complete the job. NOT to stand around and bemoan fate.georgiiii almost 9 years ago
