Pope Francis is a sharp dude. No surprise, given that he is a Jesuit. Just because recent popes were reactionaries doesn’t mean they toe the GOP line. In fact, the last several popes have referred to this issue, not just Francis. Furthermore, they are also:1. Against capital punishment. Francis has stated explicitly that it is wrong.2. Against the Iraq war and war generally. remember when George W. Bush was criticized by the Pope?3. Pro-science and pro-education. Catholics accept evolution, and many priests are scientist themselves, and Catholic schools do not provide nonscientific nonsense, as do those who reject global warming. (And yes, I am a scientist myself, a product of twelve years of Catholic schooling, and both my daughters have gone through Catholic schools.)
motivemagus: You left out the little detail that Francis has a Masters in chemistry. The Republican demand that he leave science to the scientists rather fell flat on that.
What a shame, a Pope that wants to see a living religion that goes back to the basics of preserving peace, humanity, and the planet, what a fool! Don’t subscribe to the “bible relgions”, but Francis is a pretty cool guy.
My, my, my. Whether you like it or not, the Pope is entitled, nay, empowered to speak to his followers and the rest of the world at least as much as the un-Christian science deniers in the GOP.

Who’s hearing who’s confession?

I’m sorry, some sins are beyond redemption. They’ll just abandon the Pope while continuing to milk the Catholic base for support.

more dems are Catholic than GOP. at least in my neighborhood.. Where I live, most GOP’s are Baptist or some fundamental church group

Harley, give it up. Al Gore has nothing to do with the overwhelming majority of actual scientists who believe in anthropogenic climate change..

The GOP is fine with religious in politics as long as they spout the Republican line.

You know the Repugs have gone waaaay too far to the right when the Pope isn’t conservative enough for them.

Liked this pope at first but now he is heading towards a one world order in religion and so many are going for that in politics and business.
