“Heat” and “humidity” are the reasons pools are so great! Get thyself to the pool or the lawn sprinkler!

DC summer heat and humidity drove us to play in the woods, or in sprinklers, or in the cool recesses of the basement. (We didn’t have central air until I was in high school.)

It’s odd how the fresh air fiends don’t want the windows and doors wide open in the winter.

Going to the pool means mom has to go to the pool too, which means mom has to get outside in that heat and humidity. Madeline’s staying inside.

I don’t remember being bothered much by the heat.I remember when I was 5 and it was 113* out, I expect my mom had told me this later, at least the temp, my mom had set up a fan and had my lie on the floor with a damp towel over me.I had probably been out playing and got too hot. No AC at that time. But I really don’t remember heat bothering me, and had not heard of humidity, or wasn’t interested in it. After we moved back to Kansas after living in Albuquerque, Then I noticed humidity!I’m getting pretty old now, and the heat Really bothers me a lot. It’s like my heat/cold controls have shut down.No fun. But Alice is so young, I’m surprized it would bother her.And yes, get mom to take her swimming, sounds like she misses those days!

I didn’t have A/C till we rented part of the top floor of an antebellum mansion in Alabama when we were twenty-five, and it was 1960. Put a unit in the bedroom. The couple of years before that I taught at St. Petersburg Jr. College. It just had tall floor fans, which some teachers turned onto themselves. I shared mine with the rest of the class. I mentioned this before, but I think for a different strip.

I don’t remember being bothered by heat or humidity when I was Alice’s age — I guess we really were in a mini ice age.
