As a tea totaler, I have never understood substance abuse. Always assumed it was weakness of character, although I suppose it could be body chemistry.

I see four types of addictions, with many sub-classes: sexual, substance, gambling, and (fast-rising) computer.

abbybookcase: Walt Kelly (Pogo) was fond of the phrase, “replete with rue”..Carl R: The word came from a member of the Rochdale Pioneers, who defined cooperative in 1844. Both co-ops and avoidance of alcohol were recommended in reducing poverty. He ultimately became a professional lecturer despite his stuttering – memorized material can be delivered without stuttering, as Mel Tillis proved. However, his stutter of “total” in avoiding alcohol, led to the word.

I always thought a teetotaler was a golfer who habitually flubbed his drives.

I think I could use a glass of Shiraz, Australian is the best IMHO… after reading all the comments. I used to be a practicing teetotaler… then I realized I liked red wine… A LOT :)
