Will this mean the next time a young woman reports an assault people will compare it to the moment depicted in Mr. Arial’s work? Women and young men are sexually assaulted in colleges and universities where they invest money to pursue an education in safety. There is a history of these institutions protecting their reputations at the cost of victims, that was why Rolling Stone thought they had a story worth pursuing. Sadly, it appears they shed light on an illusion. If colleges and universities take a no tolerance stance on assault, students will be more reluctant to risk their money and reputations on bad behavior.Respectfully,C.
It’s ridiculous to buy the hype that one in five females are raped in college. That would be more than a war zone and I don’t think our colleges are that crazy yet.
I think the stats for rape are less than reliable, for various reasons. But I also suspect, whatever the official stats may be, that a lot of women have been raped and even more have been sexually abused or harassed. My mother was raped by a neighborhood kid when she was about 50 years old. My sister was raped by a stranger when she was about 10. My first girlfriend, way back when, had been raped when she was 12. I have a friend who is one of four sisters, all of whom were raped by their father. Another friend had an uncle who made her give him hand jobs when she was around 10 to 12. And another friend whose father committed incest with her repeatedly when she was in her early teens. And another friend, male, who was in a scout troop the leader of which abused pretty much all the boys in the troop. There is also physical abuse that doesn’t include rape. I hear about a lot of that from my female students. Much of this was kept pretty quiet until recently. It used to be that someone who was raped was suspected of somehow encouraging it. And children who were raped or abused were often told that worse would happen if they told. It’s very important to get this out in the open.
