Marriage = Man + woman has been defined by society which includes the church for centuries1) King Solomon had multiple wives2) In this country, it was defined as one white man and one white woman. The marriages between black slaves were not recognized. That definition was changed to be one man and one woman of the same race. Interracial marriages were not recognized. Marriage is a societal construct. It evolves along with society. You don’t have to evolve with it, but you don’t have the right to stop what two consenting adults do in their own lives.3) You and your church do not have the right to dictate my beliefs. It’s as simple and equal as that. No one is forcing your church to perform or recognize gay marriages just as your church is currently not forced to perform or recognize straight marriages.

It comes down to conservatives forcing other’s to do what they want. There is nothing in the new laws that prevent conventional marriages only some changes to make the law more fair for people with unconventional families. Just like when they try to make an abortion illegal. It is all about forcing others to conform to their view of the world.

Times change. Slavery was acceptable, now it isn’t, as was child labor, women not voting etc..same sex marriage harms no one and a boon to tax revenue as well as business.

comicsfan: I was also thinking of polyandry and that it would totally freak out all those male legislators and prognasticators who quietly smirk to themselves at the thought of polygamy and having THEIR multiple spouses to please them.

“carnalphobia” is for the religious and those terrified someone other than themselves will get their rocks off, and have a happy life with equal rights.

“I object to the rampant sexism! Polyandry should be added to the mix.”I don’t oppose multiple marriages. I don’t care what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home. I wouldn’t mind having two husbands myself. The problem is with the legal rights and responsibilities—inheritance, guardianship, child custody, et cetera. You get that sorted out, and I’ll be the best man at your polygamous wedding.

“Nope defininition is ‘the state OR ceremony of being married; marriage.’”The state does not recognize any religious marriage ceremony unless the legal paperwork has been filed and approved. Religious institutions are under no obligation to recognize any marriages or divorces what so ever. I went to high school with a young lady who had a legally recognized civil marriage ceremony after she found herself in the family way. Her priest refused to recognized her marriage because it was not sanctified by the Catholic Church and demanded that she confess it as a sin every Sunday. She stopped going to confession and considered it problem solved.

“This is nothing but a wedge issue the Democrats use against the Republicans.”Dude, this started as a wedge issue Republicans used against the Democrats. In my state, Republicans pushed to have a constitutional gay marriage ban put on the ballot. Not only was the ban soundly rejected, it motivated more Democrats to vote in that election and the Democrats won a majority in the state legislature. The very next year said legislature passed a law to grant same sex marriage. Hell, even a couple of Republicans voted in favor of it. I have the Republicans and their wedge issue to thank for having full marital equality within my state.

“First I stated society which includes churches… a church has the right to dictate your belief if you wish to be a member of that church or religion… but that is not the issue… you use the terms “gay marriage” and “straight marriage” which indicates you see a there is a difference….”I am not a part of your church, nor will I ever be. You and your church have absolutely no right to dictate what I believe. It is as simple as that. The only difference between gay marriage and straight marriage is that marriage between gay couples are currently still illegal in some states.

No, you’re not telling me what to believe. You want to prevent me from marrying the consenting adult of my choice. You don’t have that right. You still haven’t answered: How does same sex marriage harm anyone?
