I had grand jury duty in 2013 – once a week for 4 months. The first few times, I kept setting off the detector, and neither the guards nor I could figure out why. Then one guard guessed right… unbeknownst to me, my shoes had a steel shank. Went with different shoes the next week, no problem. They even went so far as to make sure my iced tea bottle in my lunch was plastic and not glass. The guards at the checkpoints were very nice, but thorough.

Meanwhile the real threats simply barge in, shooting as they go, or bring in a binary explosive (easy to make at home) in plastic bottles, mix them and blow up half the courthouse. When security wastes time on silly little things you are expending effort that should be used for real threats. That’s why the TSA doesn’t find bomb making materials before they get on planes. Up to passengers (as in the attempted shoe bomber) to save themselves where the TSA failed. They are checking the wrong people from political correctness and they are really not very well trained.
