Stewart was FAR more accurate on the news he put out than any of the networks, and it was his mocking of the Fox hockum that righties resented, because he was simply correct!!
Yes, everybody makes mistakes but Williams lied. He perpetuated this (one) lie for over 12 years. That is not a mistake but a flat out lie. Then there are the other lies that have come to the surface. He is in a profession that is supposed to inform the public and give us the TRUTH regardless of ones personal or political views. He violated that axiom and should pay the consequences (including the ridicule) that goes along with it.
