Roseanne, I wish I could identify the beach, truth is it could be any one of a number of the beaches in the False Bay area which is very popular with Capetonians. I seem to remember from a strip last year that they favoured St James’ beach but there is not enough detail in the strip to give a clue. I can say that it is likely to be a beach close by to where they are living. They wouldn’t have gone to a beach on the other side of the Peninsular. I know that if Capetonians have been invited to a barbecue [braaivleis in South Africa] they always phone up just a short while before they leave to check on the weather as it is likely to be very, very different. :-)) The mountains and the cloud cover gives clues to the experienced Cape Town veterans.

When there is a south-easterly wind blowing it can form what is known as the Cape Tablecloth. The dense cloud forms over the top of the mountain and looks jut like a giant tablecloth. There is an old local legend that this was caused by the Devil having a smoking competition with one of the locals. I first heard about this legend when I was about 8 years’ old and it was in our school history book.

Ironically, those of us in the Pacific Northwest (like Val and Joan) are feeling a little guilty when we hear how you Easterners are freezing!
