Doesn’t always happen. My father was a dentist, yet I still have a bunch of fillings. My childish logic was that my dad would fix whatever happened to my teeth. Sure, he could fill them up, but they are far from perfect and obviously, once there is a filling, the tooth can never be perfect again. On the positive side, I now especially value my teeth, take excellent care of them, and make sure my kids take good care of theirs (using myself as a bad example).
Money is not the point here — as a brass player, I get the willies every time the dentist does anything. A tiny mistake on his/her part could be career-ending for me. Some horn players even have plaster casts made of their teeth in case of accident, so they can be restored, even with imperfections, to the embouchure they’re used to. Non-brass players wouldn’t understand. Our lips and teeth are just like a violinist’s or pianist’s arms, hands and fingers.
I ran into an old high school band mate that I hadn’t seen in decades. I knew through a mutual friend that he was still into music, so I asked about his trumpet playing. He said he fell going into a restroom and deadened a nerve, and cannot play at all. Still, I’d trade my (limited) trumpet skills for his bass playing in a heartbeat.

“Can’t afford a mistake.” Here I’m nursing a toothache while reading about dental work.

I’m not shocked, I bet Michael, Elizabeth (and years later April) all had perfect teeth, even with all the sweets they eat
