Charlie Brown must not be the only victim of that tree.

Gloriously painted understatement! Alice and Beni have wandered past a much more sinister version of Charlie Brown’s infamous tree, I guess….

It looks like a hybrid of the kite eating tree and the whomping willow. Also, the way it’s squatting or kneeling, with the “arms” up, brings to mind Atlas. Especially with the sun kite in there.

Sometimes the Sunday strip actually is part of the story arc. For whatever reason, a Sunday strip was skipped in the “full” rerun, too long ago for me to find, and the original sequence had the strip from last Sunday shown here (click image for its GoComics page; click it there to enlarge it):2/27/102/28/10where it would have made a lot more sense, as pretty much the end of that story arc (even had a couple comments by Mr. Thompson).

My father had a tree right next to his upstairs window (his bedroom was over the garage, and he snored too formidably and kept the window too open for Mom) and though it wasn’t given a chance to be a kite-eating tree, every morning before dawn, a mocking bird would tune up with its own cacophony. Dad would yell at the bird, go down and throw things at it, and try to flush it out with the hose, but it just kept right on singing and probably having mockingbird hysterics.
