The US has become calloused to the wrongs committed by our military. Hell, Cheney is proud of his enhanced interrogation techniques along with his minions. Excellent cartoon.

Bruce: “That being said, the United States has declared “War” on “Terrorism”. If you are to engage in war, then you MUST bring your “A” game. Simply put, you kill every thing in your path until there is nothing left to kill. Last man standing wins. So to speak.”

Nonsense. The whole idea behind the concept of “War Crimes” is that there are some actions which are unacceptable even in times of war. It has been said that this idea is “quaint”, but I disagree. If you’re claiming any sort of moral high ground, you must act accordingly. If you would slay dragons, take care lest you BECOME a dragon.

It’s a minority of soldiers who would commit atrocities without being ordered to do so, and a minority of commanders who would order them. (I believe or at least HOPE that this is true.) But those who do so cannot be winked at or dealt with lightly, or the rest will come to think “Well, I guess it’s OK to commit a war crime if it’s REALLY REALLY REALLY expedient.”

Scorched-earth, take-no-prisoners “Total War” IS an atrocity.

If the city-state of Fritzenburg and the city-state of Bruciania went to war, and the Brucianians flouted the Geneva convention and burned Fritzenburg to its foundation stones and slaughtered its civilian population, Bruciania would be reduced to a status of pariah state by the world community, a coalition of other city-states would invade and remove its leaders and put them on trial. If your battle plan resembles a “Final Solution”, you’d better make damm sure it’s FINAL.

The war of 1812 was started becuse the Royal Navy considred U.S. sailors to be fair game for impressing into British naval vessels, unless I’m mistaken. Can you cite a source, sirrom?

The Americans could certainly cite numerous egregious provocations, but they were the ones who actually declared war on June 18, 1812, and invaded Canada.

By the same token, you could claim that Great Britain started World War II because they declared war on September 3, 1939, even though they could certainly cite numerous egregious provocations by Germany. The one who throws the first punch isn’t always the one who starts the fight.
