I got my start in the newspaper industry as a courier, and I still deliver in addition to my other duties.[]I can’t tell you how often I’ve been pulled over by the police. After all, an older sedan driving circles through residential neighborhoods at night does indeed look somewhat suspicious.[]Not once did I think about giving the cops any grief. We were each doing our job, and it only took a little civility before we were both back on our way.[]In time, the local police department came to learn what my car looked like and so logged it and the plate for future reference; I normally only get stopped now if I’m having to use someone else’s vehicle (like when I had a breakdown a few weeks ago), and even then some of the police know my face & so let me on my way.[]Oh, and I’m white. []Not once did my skin color influence how the police reacted. []Civility and face-to-face contact did.
