Free speech comes with responsibilities. When you yell fire in a crowded theater and end up killing people as a result, that is not defensible as free speech. If you insist on insulting another persons deepest held beliefs you should not be too surprised if something bad happens.
I don’t think that is what he meant. In today’s world we should not be surprised at intolerance and the sad responses. It is a shame we cannot speak our minds and still feel safe.
While the ’toonists knew who these guys were, and rightfully are showing them respect for their courage to confront ALL hypocrisy they saw, NOT just Islamic nuts, the majority of Americans, the VAST majority, had no clue who these folks were until yesterday.
Which, speaking of hypocrisy, every time I see folks hatefully using the phrase “kill all the infidels”, I reflect on the Oxford English Dictionary, in which the first definition of “infidel” is “ANY NON-CHRISTIAN”!
We do need to defend free speach, but that doesn’t mean lies, fabrications to incite riot, or pure hatred against others, regardless who that might be.
The hatred of American Jews and Christians aimed at Muslims, and numerous other groups, predates 9/11/01 by a considerable time frame, think Jap, Gook, Kraut, etc, hmm, and Iroquois, Sioux, Apache, Navaho, fall in there as well.
Free speach, means being wiling to probe and condemn all hypocrisy and “evil”, which is what got “Charlie” in trouble, it wasn’t just Muslims that condemned them.

Oh the irony of someone making Ted Lind’s comments while sporting a gocomics “PRO” badge!

Ted Lind: Let’s also remember that the “theater fire” quote originated in upholding the prosecution of someone criticizing war.

I guess that Ted Lind actually thinks that there are still followers of Abrahamic religions that still believe sincerely in the third commandment.
