As a kid many years ago, I went airborne off a ten foot embankment….landed on my back and knocked the wind out of me. In near panick, trying to breath; I heard one of my friends yell…“James just killed himself!” I could hardly walk home and was in pain for weeks. We were country kids and hospital visits were seldom deemed necessary. I’m sure I broke some ribs. I’m reminded of it every time I watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation….but to me it was real.

I remember when they first came out (yes, I’m old) and thought they were really slick (which they were, and would work in snow that sleds wouldn’t) until I found myself going backwards down a slope toward a grove of trees. Oh well, they were an improvement on coal shovels.

Our group of Neighborhood kids once acquired a 1949 Plymouth Hood. We used it to slide down the side of an Earthen Dam. Until one of the Girls ended up with a Broken Collar Bone. The adults took it away, and handed out mass punishment to all involved. Except the injured girl, I guess you could say she Unlucked out!
