Sterling was well known to be a racist slumlord long before his “scandal” broke. My understanding of Pascal’s emails is that their still milder than what I’ve read here on the GoComics fora. The question is, how much bigotry has she displayed apart from those emails?
Why do these people quoted below still have their jobs after their racist quotes?
“You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking!” – Joe Biden, Vice President.“I mean you’ve got the first sort of mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and nice-looking guy.” – Joe Biden, Vice President.“[Harry Reid] was wowed by Obama’s oratorical gifts and believed the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as a Obama — a ‘light-skinned’ African American with ‘no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.’” – Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, as quoted in the book Game Change
“Owners are not employees. They do not lose their jobs.”Sterling lost his job as owner of the Clippers when his wife took legal control of the Sterling family trust and sold the team against Sterling’s wishes.
Oh, so if you’re a Democrat there’s a time period where it is suddenly all is forgiven? You can work off your guilt? Quick! Somebody tell Paula Deen! She said something 20 years ago and looses her cooking empire. The VICE-PRESIDENT and MAJORITY LEADER of the SENATE says far worse things within the last few years and yet they still hold their jobs. On what scale do you rate when somebody’s “made up for it”?
Actually, Mother Jones ran a good artilce that points out that research has proven even those of us who don’t conciously think ourselves “racist” or in any way bigoted, do indeed have a subconscious component that we still have to suppress, biology, nature or nurture?
One difference is that those of us with personal experiences of a negative nature with certain cultures will base our prejudices on those experiences to some degree. How well we do at suppressing that until we’ve at least given every INDIVIDUAL a chance to experess who THEY are, is the difference. (My own “weak point” is indeed a Hindu caste mark, bad life experiences with that one. Confession may not be indeed good for the soul, but it admits our own realities about hypocrisy.)
“Bigots are really just ignorant or lazy. There is no rational excuse for disliking individuals you have never met.”Again, there’s a biological reason behind it. However if we, as humans, want to distinguish ourselves from the rest of the animals, we have to do a better job of overcoming our biological predispositions. It’s one of those pesky prices of progress.
