Why are there still leaves on the trees in November in Massachusetts? Can’t Mr. Ramirez get anything right?

But seriously, folks, I do not think the early English settlers, like those who came to what is today Massachusetts, had any thought about subduing and killing off the natives. (The Spanish explorers DID!) When the “Pilgrims”, off the Mayflower arrived, they soon found some natives who spoke English! Where did they learn that? It seems that a little further north, in what is today the town of Ipswich, English fishermen had landed there for many years prior, after fishing the banks offshore. They built several structures, and dried their fish, and returned with their catch to England each year. Years later, as settlers moved inland, toward New York, things became more serious, as some tribes resented the intrusion. Settlers soon became enraged at some of the butchery practiced by a few tribes, and then began to treat all natives as barbarians, deserving to be slaughtered. It was unfortunate, but it happened. Add into the mix the racial pride of white supremacy, and that was it, for most Native Americans. If Columbus had foundered, and not returned from his voyage, it was only a matter of time that others would arrive. It is Man’s sorry history of the strong taking from the weak.(Not too unlike today’s economic scenario!)

What some here might not know is that Thanksgiving as a Holiday was NOT instituted by the Pilgrims at all. It was instituted by then President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 in thanksgiving for the Union victories of the third year of the Civil War. Such victories as the haulting of General Lee’s invasion of the North at Gettysburg over the forth of July week of 1863, General Grant’s taking of Vicksburg at the same time (thus freeing up the Mississippi River from the Confederacy), and especially Generals Thomases and Grant’s recent victory over the surrounding Confederacy at Chattanooga. You can read all about it in Shelby Foote’s truly exhaustive and escellent (3,000 or so pages in three volumes) total history of that most terrible of American Wars!

Just a note: it was the white, religious, authoritarian guys who had the guns, and used them. Hmm they were also large numbrs of deprted criminals, like but not totally like, in Australia. The poor huddled masses are much less dangerous.
