    only the Aussies visiting/living here call them thongs, the rest of us call them flip flops

    @luv2bead:Not so, in Texas anyway. They were thongs in the 50’s and 60’s, and didn’t become flip-flops until the 70’s. Maybe a Jimmy Buffett thing.

    I was born in the late 50’s and grew up calling them thongs. I don’t know when it got changed to flip-flops.

    There is a song by the Beach Boys, All Summer Long, in which proper summer attire is described: “T shirt, cut-offs and a pair of thongs”.
