In todays world whaling is looked at as bad.Back in 1906 it was a necessary industry. Most stuff used some form of whale oil, bones and such.Petroleum was new and untapped as a resource. This later made whaling obsolete.Of course this lead to a whole other set of problems.
If you are looking for conventional jokes in this strip you won’t find many. A lot of early 20th C. humor was about non sequitur lines and deadpan reactions. Anyhow, this strip was primarily a vehicle for Feinningers draftsmanship
