It’s never fun camping out on the couch, but she’s trying to be upbeat. I’m surprised the kids aren’t sleeping on the couch or the floor. It’s usually more fun for them and they should be the flexible ones. I always slept on the floor at my grandparents’ house so the adults could get the beds.
Had 2 grandmothers, no grandfathers, both grandmothers stayed at my Aunts’ houses so never had to give up my bed and no one slept on the couch. Cousin came to spend the night, one time and she slept with my Mother. Mother didn’t think that 8(me) and 9(cousin) should sleep in the same room since we were boy and girl .
When I was a kid I got ready for camp once by sleeping on the floor with just a quilt or something under me. At camp, other kids were griping about their cots, but I thought mine felt luxurious.
There was a future one where John was less flexible (Elly in agreement with him) where John is blunt with the bickering kids that they need to start sharing. I believe it was after Elly’s mother died and she invited her father to move in with them.

Lots of people have those blow up beds handy, now. The higher off the floor they are, the better.
