Val: Bye, Phil!
Phil: Bye, Val! Say hi to Joan and Wally for me...
Phil: ...and Evie and Arnold when you talk with them.
Val: Joan and Wally...Mom and Arnold...
Val: Me and my kitchen.
I think that is the reason why Val is still alone – she enjoys companionship of a boyfriend but does not want to be in a committed relationship where she has to make sacrifices and compromises. She enjoys the advantages of single-hood with the benefits of a boyfriend. She gets to raise her girls her way without interference of a step dad. She gets to do things her way without compromising with a husband. She gets to manage her own money without sharing it with a husband. She runs her own home without any interference by a husband. She goes out and have fun with a boyfriend when the mood strikes. She gets to sleep with him and has him leave before her girls get up. She was married before and remembers how it was and now chooses to stay alone. A boyfriend is enough.

I don’t think she looks lonely at all, more like contentment.
