I can’t remember whose memoir this is from, but I read a story about a little boy who did accidentally burn down the family home. They were farmers, and the entire family (including at least one other child, I believe) had to spend the entire winter living in a shack elsewhere on the property before they could build a new home.

This was quite a while ago, and at least they did have the land, the shack, as well as the materials and expertise to build a new home.
