Why bother considering the consequences? Just work out how long it is to the next general election and say the airstrikes will take at least that long.
Then, if it goes well (not too many civilians killed, maimed or made orphans), you can get-re-elected. If it goes badly, you’ll lose the election but the opposition will get the blame for not winning the war.
It’s a win-win for the politicians AND they get to prove they are real men by ordering the deaths of others. What’s not for them to like?
