Edward, the hammer and sickle is understood by many as a symbol for communism. The red star is seen many places including our state flag in California and is not understood in the same sense.
This is going to get more interesting as Hong Kong is the financial keystone to the capitalistm movement even on the mainland. Still totalitarian, yes, but at the same time, the Chinese leadership has changed in recent years, and income is displacing ideology with many in the leadership. Mao isn’t nearly the psychological driver any more so much as perhaps Adam Smith.
