This is pretty much what I thought of when I learned about the Hong Kong protests. There’s very, very little chance this will end well. The Chinese Communist Party gave up their communist ideals a long time ago, but they will not give up power. Mainland China doesn’t have anywhere near the freedoms Hong Kong enjoys. The government will likely crush the Hong Kong protests to prevent them spreading to the mainland.

When we saw Tianenmen Square, I wondered how many of the Chinese tourists in the place knew of the significance it has for those outside the country. (I didn’t ask anybody, not being nuts.)

I predict they’ll eventually have a regime that will talk about the confrontations of that day. It will happen when they’re far enough away in time that they can disown the acts of the government of the earlier day.

At the time, my thought was that one day there would be a sculpture of the face-off between the tank and the protester, and that the tourists (mostly Chinese) would take their picture standing in front of it.

The gigantic internet shopping site, and the billionaire running it, may be more indicative of something the old leadership may be losing control of? Still plenty of room for the “old hats” to keep screwing up, but in many ways, China may be more “Captialist” in operation, than our own industrial base today? Monopolies are NOT “captialism” actually, and a press controlled by them isn’t exactly “free”, nor is “free” speech predicated on how much money you’re willing to spend to indundate the opposition with YOUR message.

Then there’s the issue empires built by military force, like the one desired by the Project for a New American Century (think Cheney, Rumsfeld, Perle et al – the guys who brought is Iraq).
