Germany still uses a familiar Roundel which replaced the similar Balkenkreuz whereas the Swastika has now become synonymous with Nazism.As you said, the Red Star is still widely used, the hammer & sickle not. Why not just use the Red Star? It is familiar enough as well and spot on.
