Wellll. This is more complicated than that. If a company wants your account number, all they have to do is look at your check. On the other hand, this does not automatically give them access to your account. My kids tell me the same thing, but my response is that I don’t want to have to worry about the security of every company with whom I deal. Sometimes being super connected isn’t the best thing in the world.
Burl doesn’t direct deposit his pay either cuz he doesn’t want his bank to know his account number. As a CCD leader he knows what those deposit envelopes are for.
Husband uses direct pay and deposit. Its too complicated for me tho.My late mother always thought I could “get” into her bank account. I’d have to drop her at the door of the bank and not come in. Now I have her money anyway. Sigh.
If somebody really wants bank account numbers, he can get them…. and not just from stored online data…
Keyloggers placed by criminals can record numbers from ATM transactions, crooked bank employees can sell hard copies of posted checks and deposits…. someone can go through your trash, for that matter, and take the 10 year old checks you threw away, in case the account number might still be valid. On and on.
Cash would be the only safe method… if it weren’t so vulnerable to fire, water, skullduggery and outright theft.
My bank encourages the opening of an extra account for online and phone transactions….
they say you should keep the balance low, and only deposit enough from your regular account to cover what you plan to spend soon.
Sounds good… but if the bank can tell your accounts are linked…. so that you can make those deposits online….can’t the hackers?
And of course…. their altruism may be just a leeettle bit suspect… cos of course, that new account carries a (cough) nominal fee.
Burl and Joy play a lot of games with bill paying, so they need to mail time to kite the checks before he is paid, Then they can claim they paid on time to get out of late charge, when really they did not. I am surprised Patty does not know this about them.
This is one of those days when many comments reflect that the authors see themselves in the Pennys. I’m happy to report that my kids are bringing me into the light and I am beginning to enjoy automatic payments.Although, plenty of other days I see more ‘Penny’ in me than I’d like to admit.
I use autopay for smaller amounts (my phone bill) but I pay electric directly from my account (when I’m sure it’s covered), the cable and water go on charge accounts (each individually) to keep track of expenses. I also track and pay all of my credit cards online and even pay medical bills directly from my bank. The only checks I write are for things like landscaping.
I pay most of my bills online . the only ones I do autopay are my car and house payments because the amount is constant. The others vary and I usual like to round up 5 to 10 dollars. or if I have a something like a emergency repair I like to be able shift a payment. Our city doesn’t have online payment yet

Some of our local banks are charging $3 if you see a teller more than twice a month.
