Panel 3: Steve is smart to accept the Gilfather’s request. I am sure he will be rewarded handsomely in the future. Clambake refused the Gilfather, and he had to “leave town” because of it.
Ray punched Steve though. Anywhere else in the world he’d get probation. In Milford it’ll be hard time. We still haven’t found out why Steve quit college.
Mimi has put the entire team to sleep with her inspirational post game speech. Where is the you all did your best and we had a season to be proud of? Maybe she should look up some effective coaching techniques on the “evil internet”.
Steve’s glasses are tougher than he is. He looks like he had his eye socket broken but his glasses aren’t even bent.
Mimi knew Cassie was safe. I wonder, did Gil phone her or send her a text message? Lots of communication here: Gil, Mimi, the cops, Cassie’s aunt, her folks who are hustling home. Gil always liked hustle.
The same way every storyline TV show hero knows, there’s a backroom geek who can fill in any plot gap.
You call the geek and the geek can triangulate off cell phone towers and give you the badguy’s bloodtype, total life history, and bank balance. Somehow he can achieve everything else by looking at ATM and convenience store videos.
Gil’s backroom geek resides in the mop closet at Milford and will shortly be earning a letter sweater (do they still have those?) for – what else – varsity geekiness.
Still don’t get it… what exactly was Ray’s crime? (besides being a pizza guy.) He was defending himself in his own apartment when Juco misfit/janitor Steve (who’s now looking more like 52 than 22) barges in to break up his romance and then, mysteriously and magically, Gil shows up and slams him to the floor, followed immediately by Milford’s finest. I have a headache. I need a soda pop.
Perhaps Gil, in his admiration of and appreciation for Jani-King’s “thoughtful and meaningful” way of coaxing hidden talents from otherwise lackluster athletes, can convince Stevearino to start sweeping the baselines at Milford Field and use his “talents” to bring out the best in “The Ghost” when, and if, baseball season ever starts.

Use the geekguy to figure out what state Milford is in? I vote Indiana because of the use of the “playdowns”. I would like to know. Also, as the comments went last week, if this is a real-world strip, wouldn’t the girl for a teacher and not a janitor? Maybe even Gil! Now that would be interesting!

I believe that MILFord is in CT where Jack Berrill the originator was from. There are a series of compilations of the Gil years from inception to the 90’s and in one of them there was an interview with Jack B who placed the series in CT.
Knowing (or think I know) this tells me one thing…
