It was probably intentional. My mother did exactly that to a sweater that I loved that she didn’t want me to have. By the time my mother finished it off, my six-year-old niece got it to wear.
I don’t understand all those “whites with cold”, etc., instructions; I just put everything in at the same time, and nothing’s gone haywire.
