Actually , there are several different swarms of seven year cicadas. They each stagger what year they come out of the ground. They cover different areas of the country with some overlap. So, if you move around a lot, like LDL and Torti, you could see cicadas almost every year.
There are various cycles of periodical cicadas, the best known being 13 and 17 years. The Great Eastern brood, last seen in 2004, is due back in 2021. However, there are also annual cicadas, which are green, as opposed to the black periodical species. They all molt and leave their shells attached to nearby objects, as LDL has discovered.

I’m with you little dog. The other day I accidentally put my hand on a tree full of cicadas husks… I hit a high c and broke a few windows!
