I think I already know which characters were fond of intoxicating beverages in our tree. It’s the other stuff I’m finding out that surprises me.

If you’re going to research your genealogy any more than just a list of names and dates, be ready to find out all kinds of unexpected facts. I found out that a couple of my ancestors back in the 16th century had been executed. They were not married, but that wasn’t their only crime. The woman was the sister of the man’s wife. I found another guy who married twice Nothing wrong with that since his first wife died, but his second wife was only three years older than his oldest daughter by his first wife.

Hubby discovered that one of his sets of great-grandparents were married in 1733 at the church we now attend.

I found that my family is very small, and only covers close relatives. According to what my grandfather said, his grandfather changed his name after escaping prison in Canada and moving to the US cira 1890 to 1906 when he was about 30. Married and had kids after coming to US.

I almost ran into a cousin in the early 70s when I picked up my uniform from the base cleaners(I was stationed in DC at the time) then had to bring is back as it was for someone with same first and last name and same rank. Except he was 5’4" while I was 6’3" and weighed about 250. I was clearing the base as I had been reassigned to California

I was adopted, at birth, from students who were only in the country temporarily, and I was a “scandal baby”. Don’t know the full circumstances but even attempting to contact my birth parents would most likely re-open old wounds and probably result in a huge amount of embarrassment and regret. Not to mention that if they are still alive, they’re probably ancient by now. So I do not and never will know my genealogy and neither do I care. The people who raised me are my parents.
