Reminds me of a joke my dad use to tell. A middle aged man was having a drink at the bar when 2 bikers walked in. The 2 bikers were upset because the last 2 stools at the bar were on either side of the first man so they couldn’t sit together. One biker grabbed the first man and tossed him over his shoulder so he fell to the floor and he told the man, “That’s Judo from Japan.” As the man started to get to his feet the second biker hit him in the stomach so he fell back to the floor and he told the man, “That’s Karate from China.” The man got to his feet and said, “It’s obvious you 2 are looking for a fight, why don’t we take this out back?”

A few minutes later the first man walked back into the bar alone. He finished his drink and paid his bill. When he started to leave he hesitated and then turned to the bartender and told him, “When those 2 wake up, tell them that’s Tire Iron from Sears.”

Having a couple of nidan in kendo in town, we considered starting a club. When parents discovered even a shinai was banned as a bullying weapon at school, they quickly lost interest and the dojo never formed.

I thought Elvis studied American Kenpo, not Kung Fu. …and, for the record, Akido is a relatively modern Japanese martial art, not one of the Kung Fu schools. On the plus side, Shoalin and Wing Chun are two versions of Kung Fu.

    .

The history of the various martial arts gets very confusing, very fast. And there can be a large number of schools for any given martial arts style. The longer a style is popular the more competing schools get formed, and each will typically claim to be associated with the original founder or a direct descendant of the original founder. I’ve only studied three styles and it took a great deal of research and reading to sort out the various histories once I started looking deeper.
