When I was a kid we rode bikes all over Central California and never wore one of those stupid looking helmets. Took a lot of spills, never seriously hurt, none of us died. We had sense enough to know that cars were bigger and harder than we.That’s why the proliferation of idiots in American society these days. Used to be they got killed off at a rather early age.
So why is that younger kids have to wear helmets while riding bikes but as soon as they turn into teenagers and start riding skateboards, the helmets are pitched?

Yes and No fit you question. I would have modified it by "some are doing it, " which is because they think themselves invulnerable until the first bit of brain damage.
