I had a girlfriend once who always pulled this on her mother (not that it always worked). So when our relationship started getting a little rocky, when she tried the same thing on me, I knew the score…
The kid does have a point. The mother needs to chill out a little, explain in a calm voice free from hyperbolic sarcasm, that the boy is getting older. Part of getting older is to help out around the house, and especially to pick up after himself, make his own bed, etc. She might even get him to take out the trash and do the dishes, who knows?

She is not yelling, just using a normal tone of voice, same as Joe. Kids think parents are yelling when they are telling them what to do.
