Why do people put “lol” at the end of a simple statement? I thought it had to do with laughing.

I had to google pastis and kept coming up with a restaurant and a drink. I then googled Pastis and cartoon and know I know who they are talking about.
Pastis would have spent three panels in an all-too-obvious setup, probably involving no fewer than two proper names. I like the strip, but when I see him setting up like that, I groan and move on.
