Is Spork now applying to be a pharmacist? Sorry, they don’t milk shakes and sodas anymore like my great-grandfather and a granduncle used to do in Safford, Arizona, back in the day.

I worked at a locally owned tire/appliance/hardware store, putting tires on cars, delivering appliances, mixing paint, installing television antennas on very high roofs, picking up goods large and small from suppliers, making runs to the dump and whatever else the boss needed. Looking back, I actually learned quite a bit that I still use these years later.

During one summer of elementary school, I was in a day camp where we got to weed little pines among other stuff.

Aside from babysitting, my first job was bussing tables at Casa Gullardo. I was 15 and worked 40 hours per week at $4 an hour. Minimum wage was about $3.15 at the time. I was able to pay rent and save enough to have a car before I was 16.

Our local cable company tried a start up tv station. Didn’t last long, but they hired about 6 high school students to run the video cameras, sound equipment, etc. I was one of them. Loved it! I was a junior in H.S.

My first jobs were summers after starting HS (1951) – First two years I worked as bank teller and the then I worked in a factory of plastic contact lenses (measuring the power and curvature of each and filing in tiny envelopes). We even filled proscriptions from doctors (based on which doctor, we had more or less leeway in accuracy). That was interesting.
