I wonder if Ramirez’ parents ever gave him the same “advice” when he decided to be a cartoonist.

Definitely can tell the left and right leaning commentators here. The right got the joke and totally agreed with the slam on useless degrees, unless your highly connected, and the debt they saddle our youth with. The left I am sure got the joke, but felt obliged to make attempts at saying they are not useless degrees, while ignoring the debt these young adults are saddled with.

“Basic math” will also get you nowhere, now advanced math degrees, physics, or the study of “scatology” in biology for a job as a lab worker, and you can get a job!

^Conservatives have NO problem giving a gun, or a tank, to an 18 year-old kid and sending them to war, so why shouldn’t they be eligible for a school loan??

It is a pity, but true, that our fast-paced “society” requires young students to choose a technological course, and get a degree. There is no room, nor much appreciation today for the Humanities, or any Liberal Arts degree. One must get in line (I don’t mean the bread line), adapt to a new world and be able to function in it, as a technocrat.

In High School, I was the only one in history class who was genuinely interested. (My fellow students mostly slept. I’m not being entirely facetious: one time, we heard Sanderson snoring in the back row!) I still gobble up books dealing with western history today. I have read about the men who led the United States, France, Germany, Britain and many other countries during the 19th and 20th centuries. ALL were educated in Art, philosophy, languages, history, poetry and religions. These were the men who formed the governments, debated and enacted laws, guided their nations through war, social upheavals, and economic booms & busts. Today, it is sad that so much is being passed over, and (I hope not) forgotten. And, I believe that many of our current politicians suffer from a want of these enlightening studies.

I got one of those useless degrees and I earn a decent living from it. Life is more than making widgets.

True, they were mostly from the upper classes, and not everything was hunky-dory under them. The overall point I was trying to make is that times today DEMAND more tech education, leaving less emphasis on the Humanities. Liberal Arts are ridiculed on this site often. If our younger generations turn their backs on it, we are poorer because of it.

Thank you for a courteous exchange.

Here’s what I don’t understand. We all like music, we all like stories, what’s wrong with having courses in university where people can learn more about music and stories? As I said, life is more than making widgets.

That must be you when you graduated, Ramirez. All that money and you only know how to insert scat into your work and no poetry.
