The human soul is like the Tardis, so much bigger inside than out.

What about belly-button fluff? Does digging for belly-button fluff count?

Actually, that reminds me of the man I saw on the train on the way to work some 30 years ago. Busy commuter train, we’re all sitting there in silence and there’s this chap in his 40s in a suit trying to clear his nose. He eventually abandoned the tissue and went in for a good manual rummage instead. He actually got his finger in there up to the knuckle—by this point the rest of us at that end of the carriage are completely engrossed. After twisting and thrusting for a minute or so, and upon eventually achieving satisfaction, he extracted this absolutely enormous…

if you keep reading, don’t blame me. I don’t think any of us who witnessed what came next ate anything for 24 hours and I still shudder at the memory 30 years on.

… he extracted this absolutely enormous blob of shiny green gloop. He held this snot-encased finger up above his head and let it dangle for a moment, giving us all the opportunity to witness its black-speckled detail. He was so delighted with his achievement that he was utterly oblivious to his audience. Then with a look of childish delight, he popped it in his mouth.

The sound of retching filled the carriage as we witnesses had not expected that conclusion to the spectacle.

(When watching Total Recall some years later, when they got to the famous scene where Arnold Schwarzenegger removes a bug from his nose, I nearly lost my popcorn and hotdog in recalling the earlier incident.)

On one hand I am genuinely sorry for sharing that with you. On the other I am mightily relieved I have been able to get that off my chest. Thank you for listening and allowing me to share that horror. I’ll sleep more peacefully in future.
