I’ve always called it a pound sign.
It serves many purposes and continues to be a number sign AND a pound sign. Those who believe it is only a hashtag are simply undereducated.

The problem with calling it a pound sign is that on a British keyboard that is something completely different. As for “octothorpe”, I’ve always thought that was just AT&T having a good laugh on the rest of us.
