Alexi, my mother and her siblings and cousins were the first generation born in America from Italy. My grandparents and great aunts and uncles all crossed over at Ellis Island. I never knew my grandmother on that side, but I can remember as a little girl watching my Great Aunt Catherine making the dough for various dishes, ravioli, spaghetti, etc. It was a lot of work and MAN WAS IT GOOD! And every, and I MEAN EVERY morning she would get up early and attend Mass, no matter what, unless one of her children was sick.
