They better use their 15 minutes quickly, because Americans don’t like, unless it’s something involving celebrites being stupid, stories that last more then a day or two.

As we’ve reached the third critical day after the earthquake, U.S. folks have already been on the scene, doing what they can to help, for two of those days, and more are arriving.

Six days after Katrina, zip was being done. In fact incompetence would make things worse for quite some time.

We HAVE a more functional system (yes, administration) now. We HAVE noticed Haiti. But even with all the press coverage today, I still wonder if this story will hold up in the press as long as Tiger. It will be weeks, and months, before Haitians can even begin to recover from this tragedy- how long will we stick by them?

Danny Glover (a member of the same brain-trust to which Rosy O’Donnell belongs) says of the quake: “When we see what we did at the climate summit in Copenhagen, this is the response, this is what happens, you know what I’m sayin’?”

CHURCH - I am a liberial, but I didn’t say – or for that matter think – all of those things you say I did, but the one I want to reply to is the one about Christians scaring me.

I am a Christian, I try, and often fail, too follow the teachings of Christ. The people that scare me are those who call themselves “Christian” and then try to use the Bible to promote their own hate.

Hell is empty right now, as is Heaven, no one will be going anywhere until judgement day, but when that day comes I think there will be a lot of Bibles scattered around Hell as many, many people rush forward, holding their bible before them as proof that they have been sent to the wrong destination.

Even if there is no Heaven or Hell, following the teachings of Christ is not a bad thing to do.

Ken, you are right about american news’ attention span, BUT, you find the same thing just about everywhere there are 24-hour news networks (including here, with RDI, LCN and CBC newsworld.)

The White House gets all it’s “Coke” from Haiti.

fennec, do you realize the Quakers are what Anthony calls “fundamentalist”? I don’t know much about them; but I do know they were a protestant sect fundamentally opposed to the Anglican? Church’s teachings. They were called “Quakers” because of the physical manifestation of their epiphanic experiences. Same with the “Shakers” and the various charismatic groups. I hesitate to characterizethe sects further because of the possibility of error being mixed with true worship. In short…the Quakers were Holy-Rollers: Welcome to the Club.

Churchy, these Super-Lib Trolls are so similar it’s hard to tell them apart. And then one has to wonder if they’re even American and have any “skin in the game”.

American - Of, from, or birthed in America. If that is too simple for you; Remember this is not a Philip K. Dick novel and hallucinogenic drugs are not required for understanding.

Sooky, I’d stick my tongue out at you…but it’s always stuck out. :©Þ There is a definite Marxist-socialist connection from Haiti with the Democratic Party. But I’m just guessing about the Coke…They’d be middle-men anyway.

“B”- “W” left the House with his stash of white. As for born in “America”- that includes Canadians and Brazilians. All “Americans” are not born in the United States.

Senor, I have happily skipped over your post again. If you want me to read it: be more pithy…and leave out the childish sass-back. Dtroutma, and other anal-types: I don’t recall Canadians or Brazillians EVER having described themselves as “Americans”. This is another example of crazy-leftist verbal and cognitive pugilism. Again, no hallucinogens are required for understanding.

We’re north americans, and sometimes europeans refer to us as Americans, but most of the time when they say “Américains”, they mean people of the United States.

And now, there are bigger problems than coke. We’ll deal with that after the dead are burried and the living are saved.

Many folks say Columbus discovered “America” when indeed he DID land on “Haiti/Dominican Republic”, and NEVER SET FOOT ON EITHER NORTH OR SOUTH AMERICAN CONTINENTS.

A lot of folks living on the continents DO see themselves as “American”, as opposed to “European”, or “African”.

That most folks really don’t realize Columbus found Hispaniola, not “America”- only emphasizes our arrogance, and why we should care more about Haiti and other places citizens of the United States don’t even realize exist, until “it” hits the fan.

trout, It depends on your definition of America. Geographers split America in a couple of different ways. The mainstream include Hispaniola and the rest of the region. From the point of view of Europe, Columbus did indeed discover the “new world.” His voyages resulted in the exploitation of the region.

Bruce, Since you mention Cheng Ho, you might find the following article insteresting. It’s from the National Policy Institute in Tai Pei. Cheng Ho’s voyages were amazing and no one doubts his arrival in Africa but the American connection is a bitterly contested issue.

Actually, it ColOmbia- but my ancestors had already been on the northern continent for some 12,000 years BEFORE Columbus, or Vespuci stumbled across it.

With events in Haiti, and elsewhere in our hemisphere- my real concern is that it would be better if we “played nice” together more often. Of course that goes for folks in the whole world, not just in disasters, but every day.

Maybe we need more “Earthers” than “birthers”?

I’d really like to see all the places where Cheng Ho (or that chinese explorer) went. Since the Pacific is much greater than the Atlantic, he may have actually done more miles than Colombus without reaching America, but did more effor, travelled further and therefore has more merit.

CF, That’s the whole problem. We’re hung up on merit. If you want to talk about impact, Columbus and Vespucci had more simply because of the result of their explorations. If you are counting scale Ho’s we’re massively impressive. Due to a number of circumstances the Chinese turned inward after Ho’s expeditions. All were historically important.
