Capital punishment has never been a deterrent. But that may be about to change
Man: Didja hear 'about the dude they botch-executed with sketchy poisons? Missed his vein... blew up his heart... 43 minutes...
Nope, it won’t stop ‘em, Ted. Never has, never will. The kind of people who can be deterred by consequences aren’t the kind of people who go around killing people!
If it worked as a deterrent, we should put it forward for all crimes.See the speeding motorist, shot at the side of the road.Or perhaps I shouldn’t cast the first stone.
There is a difference between limiting access to guns and deterring people from committing crimes they can commit anytime. The former restricts the possibility of crimes being committed in the first place. The latter just waits for crimes to happen.
Corrections officers should be insulted by the claim that only death, not imprisonment, is needed to protect society from killers. It’s not like inmates escape from prison often. They do a damn good job…much better than the courts do at determining guilt.
Does anyone really think that capital punishment encourages murder? It provides justice and it means that society has one less murderer to worry about.

I don’t know – it’s a pretty good deterrent for me.
Point is, I don’t think you can really say that, when the vast majority of people don’t commit capital crimes.

Actually, Sharia allows the victims’ families to offer mercy. We saw this recently in Iran.
