Sports doesn’t do anything for me. If it were for my benefit it would be a waste of money to spend a dime of public money on a stadium or even school sports teams. I do understand that it’s important to some others, though, and I’m willing to chip in my fair share as long as those others do the same when it comes to things I think are important such as academics and humanities.

Pro sports is a TV show. If some other town wants to bankrupt itself building a new studio for this show, let ’em. It looks the same on my screen…

I hope they read this in Sacramento, where they’re gearing up to build a $477 million arena for the Kings. Over half will be paid by the city, which during the recession had six unemployed workers for every available job in the area and was hit by a record number of foreclosures. (Fewer homeowners = fewer property taxes paid into the city’s coffers.) They also evicted and seized the land of the Macy’s department store downtown, where they plan to build the arena, after claiming they would build it in a depressed area that was in desperate need of development. Their basketball player mayor, Kevin Johnson, is convinced the arena will bring jobs and more money to downtown, but it has yet to be proved that any sports venue has paid back what it cost to build it. More typically, they create ghost towns when games aren’t playing at home.

If I’m not mistaken, the Kings were being shopped around not too long ago. They even did a dog & pony show here in Va. Beach.

No “big league” teams here so there’s slightly less crime. We’ve got that going for us!

Ask ANYONE paying taxes in Glendale, AZ how they feel about the stadium(s) being built there now. Unlucky Saps! What a cluster that has been for them! It truly is a ghost town when nothing is there. It’s built up with stores and restaurants, out in the middle of nowhere. The Coyotes Hockey club has been in the news more times than I can count for the risk of having it sold and moved out. It has become practically a blackmail tool.
