When our latest rescue came to live with us he was shy of everything, even getting in the car. He would stand planted at the door showing no indication he knew how to get into a back seat. He was terrified of my husband so I was the only one who could help him. I’d put his front paws on the seat, put my hands around his knees and heave. Very quickly he’d be looking over his shoulder for me to give him his leg up, and I get a huge smile in return. He has since learned to jump in on his own, but I’ll always remember that about him.
My wife has a beagle/basset about 8 yrs old. Constantly looking for a way out, patrolling the fence line just in case. Whenever he gets out he goes 2 houses down the rural blacktop and begs for treats. So..we just drive down, open the back door of the truck and ask, “Jack, want to go for a ride?” Works every time.

That’s the exact routine I had to use with my Basset, except in her old age, both rear legs needed a leg up!! Miss her.

My 15 year old dachshund Einstein sometimes has trouble with just the 8-inch back steps. I was reading Fred ca 1978, so he’s got to be older.
