Stone Soup by Jan Eliot for May 04, 2014
Transcript:
Stone Soup by Jan Eliot Holly: What are you doing? Alix: Wading. Alix: I love the feel of sand in my toes, the sound of the surf, the cry of the seagulls... Holly: You're standing in our backyard wading pool. Alix: For someone who says she wants to be an ACTRESS when she grows up, you sure don't have much imagination! Holly: AHOY! A pirate ship on the horizon! Alix: Behold a FRIGATE that just sailed around the horn! Val: They're not fighting, so I won't ask. Joan: Do they get enough sleep??

Work that imagination girls. It may be the best exercise you get today!

Will Holly ever see the exotic sea creatures in that pool like Alix does?

Imagination can be thrilling and entertaining and creative. Without it life would be a terrible place.

I’m afraid not Joan.

In contemporary special effects movies and television, actors need a lot of imagination for their green screen technique. They have to act against almost nothing but what they’re told to imagine.

A little off message here, but:1. The good news: The Tampa Bay Times (formerly St. Petersburg Times – hey, newspapers have to survive, don’t they?) just started running “Stone Soup”! Yay.
2. The bad news: They’ve squunched it into a 1 3/4" X 5 7/16" space! Boo.
They have plenty of room for a long-running comic that has one speech balloon, one panel, and isn’t that great a comic, IMHO.

Thanks dzw. Maybe after I get up to WI [from FL – to see grandkids] – madly packing to leave tomorrow. Mmm – coffee and cookie sounds good!

When we were bored we would act out that we were house appliances- washing machine, popcorn popper… Lots of silly fun and laughs.

Alix sure knows how to go for the knockout punch when she wants to.

It strikes me odd in general that they would find anything unusual or puzzling about kids playing “Let’s pretend.” I mean, that’s what kids do, right? Or maybe it just happens that they never catch Holly and Alix at such times, only when they’re fighting.

They’re playing and having an imagination. Have you heard of that Val? Apparently not, she doesn’t even like for them to read fiction…
