Patty should encourage her folks to call her whenever they are in an electrical storm so she’ll know they’re OK. That way she’ll be a loving and dutiful daughter and radically increase the chances of her becoming an orphan. That’s the same strategy Burl uses with Ma.

More likely Patty has a cell phone so she is safer then Joy.

I heard that taking a shower isn’t good in a lightening storm either, but they really don’t have to worry about that one.

Just keep Joy on the phone Patty maybe ..just maybe……

I had a neighbor that was in the shower during a electrical storm, lightening struck something outside, came through the pipes to the shower head and knocked her out of the shower. She spent a day in the hospital with minor burns and some cuts from the broken shower door.

They may both suspect that they were both hit by lightning once, ala Frankenstein & Bride of Frankenstein which likely prompted them into life, and so they believe that it “wouldn’t work” a second time on them so it’s O.K on their end of the line. Or: they’re even more head-bangingly stupid than I previously have believed about them. Either-or.
