There was a case in Canada involving these two guys – or their brothers. Their car broke down in 5-F temps, so they pulled the seats out of the car and set fire to them, trying to keep warm, and to attract attention. When that didn’t work, they started to burn their personal possessions, and then set fire to the car itself. When day light came, they made their way to a nearby house. The RCMP wanted to know why this brainy duo hadn’t simply used their cell phones.
There had better be good cellphone reception where they’re headed. I wouldn’t be surprised if high-altitude places such as Mt. Washington, N.H., or Mt. Hood, Oregon don’t have good cellphone reception. Just got done listening through an audio CD story that takes place in Colorado, where cellular reception isn’t good in some places.
I knew a guy that got a $38,000 bill for getting rescued. He refused to pay. His excuse was “They never told me how much it would cost. Had I known, I would have chosen to die on the mountain.” An easy statement to make when you’re safe at home.
Whenever there is snow, hurricane, etc. we charge the camping lamp, the cell phones, the laptops, the tablet, the RV batteries, the car battery chargers (can be used with car chargers) just in case. And that is to stay home and we live on a main road and can walk to an assortment of stores.
